Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce Awards Grant

Delta Health System, the Mississippi Medical Education & Research Consortium (MSMERC), and the MS Delta Family Medicine Residency Program were awarded grants by the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce (OMPW) to enhance the residency program.

The Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce was created by state legislators in 2012 with the mission to reduce the shortage of primary care doctors in the state which has the lowest per capita supply in the nation.

“Delta Health System is appreciative of this grant awarded by the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce to the MS Delta Family Medicine Program. The support from inception has been vital and appreciated as this program continues to provide the Mississippi Delta with family medicine services for the Delta Region,” said Iris Stacker, Delta Health System Chief Executive Officer.

The Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce awarded the Mississippi Medical Education & Research Consortium, Delta Health System, Family Medicine Residency program with checks for the following:

• $800 For Wellness Resources/Equipment (site)-Used to provide to each program site for residency wellness/well-being resources of their choice (i.e. exercise equipment, meditation apps, etc.)
• $2,000 for Faculty Education Material (site)- Projected to procure educational material for faculty to enhance teaching, evaluation, and communication skills that will enhance mindfulness, DEIB, wellness, conflict resolution, and safety.
• $4,300 for Board Review Material (PSY program)-Projected to purchase and provide senior residents with board review material to prepare them for passage of the American Board Medical Specialties (specialty specific board certification).

We will use this money to better prepare our residents for the spring Board Certification exams as well as faculty development and wellness. Our program is growing, and that’s in no small part due to the support community and state organizations, such as OMPW, have generously given us,” said Brent Smith, M.D., Program Director.
