What Does Blood Do?
Blood plays several roles throughout the body, including carrying oxygen to muscles, organs, and tissues. Blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
What does blood do?
- Red blood cells – Blood mostly consists of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to body tissues and carries carbon dioxide to the lungs so it can be exhaled
- White blood cells – The body’s immune system relies on white blood cells to fight foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses
- Platelets – These are small components of blood that stick together and create clots to stop bleeding
- Plasma – The fluid that moves blood through the body is called plasma, and is composed of water, proteins, salts, sugars, fats, hormones, and vitamins
When to See a Hematologist
There are many different types of blood disorders. When your doctor finds an abnormality or medical condition related to the blood, they will refer you to a hematologist for more specialized care.
Symptoms of blood disorders include:
- High white blood cell count
- Wounds that take a long time to heal
- Irregular heart beat
- Blood clots
- Decreased red blood cells, which can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath
- Nonstop bleeding when wounded
A hematologist can confirm whether or not you have a blood disorder and start developing a treatment plan.
