Comprehensive Management of Kidney Diseases
Nephrologists are medical professionals who focus on the care and management of kidney diseases. Kidneys are vulnerable to many different types of disorders. The kidneys are also responsible for many critical bodily functions, so keeping up with kidney health is critical for your overall wellbeing. Most kidney problems occur during late adulthood, but they can affect anyone at any age.
Symptoms of kidney problems include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blood in urine
- Frequent kidney stones
- Shortness of breath without expending much energy
- Frequently feeling dizzy or lightheaded
- Swelling in hands or feet
- Food has a metallic taste
- Frequent need to urinate but not much comes out
- Changes in consistency of urine
The main kidney problem that patients need to prevent or manage is chronic kidney failure. This is when the kidneys gradually lose their function, leading to total kidney failure. Chronic kidney disease is most common in patients who have related conditions such as diabetes, HIV/Aids, and hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
About Dialysis
There is a treatment for patients who experience total kidney failure. Dialysis is a recurring treatment in which patients are connected to a machine that will perform the functions of the now defunct kidneys. Dialysis machines remove waste material from the body and helps regulate the body’s nutrients. Patients who require dialysis will need to return for treatment several times a week. Dialysis treatments do not end unless a patient is able to undergo a successful kidney transplant procedure.
