Greenville & Washington County Sleep Facility
The Medical Center's First Certified Sleep Facility
The Medical Center acknowledges the importance of sleep in a person’s life and that there are medical disorders related to sleep patterns. Everyone has his or her own unique way of sleeping. The truth is some of the nighttime habits you consider harmless may actually be signs of an underlying sleep disorder. One out of every three Americans experiences some kind of sleep problem. Symptoms can include everything from snoring, waking too early or abnormal breathing while asleep, to having muscle weakness or exhaustion during the day.
A sleep study is a safe, painless and simple evaluation of how your body functions during sleep and is performed by a registered sleep technician. The data recorded while you are sleeping, is later reviewed by a board-certified sleep physician. If you do have a sleep disorder, it is important to be diagnosed and treated.
While you sleep, state-of-the-art polysomnograph (PSG) equipment records physiological responses like brain waves, airflow, oxygen level, heart rate, eye movement and muscle activity. Testing typically begins at 8:00 p.m. and is concluded at 5:00 a.m. the following morning. It’s a painless, private process that’s very accurate in finding underlying sleep problems. After your physician reviews the results of the sleep evaluation, you will be notified about the findings. If a sleep disorder is discovered, treatment can begin immediately.
